Upgrading

Upgrading to a later version of V8 Search XE retains your current monitoring data in the Data Repository. V8 Search XE updates the Data Repository database schema to the newer version during installation.

 How do I know when an upgrade is available?

Open the settings dialog and click on the button "check for updates" in the lower right corner.

When an upgrade is available, V8 Search XE displays a message.

 Before upgrading

Before you upgrade to a later version, we recommend that you back up your current Data Repository. Once the upgrade is completed, you won't be able to roll back to a previous version of your Data Repository database.

 Upgrading to V8 Search XE Version 3
You should only upgrade to Version 3 if your current V8 Search XE license includes a valid support and upgrades package.

If you upgrade with a support and upgrades package, the Version 2 licenses expire and V8 Search XE reactivates them as Version 3 licenses. 

If reactivation fails, or the Version 2 license doesn't include support and upgrades, V8 Search XE deletes the serial numbers from the Configuration > Licensing page and starts a 14-day trial of Version 3. You cannot roll back to the previous version.

If your Version 2 license doesn't include support and upgrades, we recommend that you install a trial version of Version 3 on a separate machine. When you're ready to purchase Version 3 licenses, you can add the support and upgrades package to make upgrading easier.

 Installing the upgrade

The upgrade installer is the same installer you used when you first installed V8 Search XE. It replaces the current V8 Client and configuration, but keeps the current V8 Search XE SQL Database and V8 services.

You will need to re-enter the account credentials for the V8 search XE to connect to the Data Repository.

To install the upgrade:

  1. Download the installer to the machine that hosts the V8 Search XE.

  2. Run the installer, and follow the wizard to re-install the V8 Search XE.

  3. On the Set up Data Repository page, the Data Repository details are entered for you. You don't need to set up the Data Repository again.

  4. Under Connect to Data Repository database using, enter the credentials for an account with db_owner permissions.


     

    V8 Search XE uses these credentials to upgrade the Data Repository after installation.

  5. If you open V8 Search XE before the upgrade is complete, you'll see the upgrade dialog:


     

    If the upgrade is not successful, an error page is displayed.


     

 Upgrading errors

If you encounter an error when upgrading, refer to the error message highlighted in the box. These error messages are returned by SQL Server, not V8 Search XE.

The most common reason for a failed Data Repository upgrade is that the account entered doesn't have sufficient permissions to modify the database. Enter an account with db_owner permissions and click Retry Upgrade.

The account credentials are only used to upgrade the database schema. They aren't used by V8 Search XE for anything else.
